CASPER, Wyo. — The rotating beacon which helped aircraft navigate the airspace at the Casper-Natrona County International Airport for nearly 50 years will now alert fliers that their luggage is imminent.

The beacon had been installed on top of the Air Traffic Control Tower in summer 1973, said Glenn Januska, C-NCIA Airport director, in the release.

It was replaced with an LED on Aug. 24, 2022.

“There was a lot of interest in the disposition of the beacon once it was removed,” Januska said.

Now the old beacon has been relocated to the airport terminal building baggage claim area, where it will spin to accompany the activation of the baggage carousel belt.

Januska said the beacon rotates fully 12.5 times per minute, or 750 rotations per hour.

“Assuming it is on an average 11 hours per day, at 8,250 rotations per day, it rotated approximately 148,085,750 times during its lifetime.”
