CASPER, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) report that a record 138 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized across the state as of Wednesday, Nov. 4.

COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased to 124 in Wyoming hospitals on Tuesday, down from the previous record of 132 patients on Monday.

COVID hospitalizations sharply increased throughout the month of October and into November. There were 27 COVID patients in Wyoming hospitals as of Oct. 1, according to the WDH. Wyoming saw more than 100 patients hospitalized due to COVID for the first time on Oct. 25.

In addition to the record number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized on Wednesday, the number of overall patients in intensive care unit beds across the state was up from Tuesday.

61 of an avaible 127 ICU beds across the state were occupied by COVID-19 or other patients on Wednesday. 57 of an available 128 ICU beds were occupied on Tuesday.

The number of ventilators in use has remained relatively flat. Ventilators are sometimes used to treat COVID-19 patients. 22 of an available 185 ventilators across the state were in use on Wednesday.

As of Nov. 2, hospitals across the state had completed 47,833 COVID-19 tests. 5.93% of those tests have come back positive.

Since hospitals self-report data to the WDH, State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist has said that the WDH data about hospital resources and COVID-19 hospitalizations is best used to track trends in overall COVID hospitalizations or resource availability.

Harrist has said that the data should be considered an approximation of the exact numbers since hospitals self-report the data and the actual statewide numbers could vary slightly.

The Wyoming Department of Health provide data about the number of COVID patients in specific hospitals in the state, but caution that the data is self-reported by hospitals and that “non-general acute hospitals (e.g., rehabilitation hospitals) may report COVID-19 hospitalizations but these data do not always reflect statewide capacity issues.”
