CASPER, Wyo. — In Wyoming, the total number of people who have received an initial dose of a COVID vaccine has surpassed the total number of confirmed and probable cases reported since the start of the pandemic.

At least 57,063 people had received an initial dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine in Wyoming as of Monday, compared with the 52,627 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 the Wyoming Department of Health has reported.

With about one in ten people having received their first dose of one of the COVID vaccines, Natrona County continues to lead the state in terms of first dose vaccine administrations.

9,646 people in Natrona had received a first dose as of Monday, according to WDH data. That amounts to about 12% of Natrona’s population. The county had a population of about 79,858 in 2019, according to U.S. Census Bureau.

Natrona continues to vaccinate people 70+ as well as Natrona County School District K-12 staff, healthcare workers and emergency responders, but the Casper-Natrona County Health Department announced Monday that residents 65-70 as well as people 16-65 with some pre-existing medical conditions are now eligible to register for the waitlist to receive a COVID vaccine.

People can also register for the COVID-19 vaccine waitlist online.

People 16-65 with the following pre-existing medical conditions can register for the waitlist:

  • cancer
  • chronic kidney disease
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • solid organ transplant
  • sickle cell disease
  • down syndrome
  • diabetes
  • heart conditions
  • obesity
  • immunocompromised
  • stroke
  • dementia

While Natrona is leading in terms of first dose vaccinations, Sweetwater County has administered the highest number of second doses. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine require two doses for maximum effectiveness.

Sweetwater had administered 2,600 second doses, followed by Natrona’s 2,182 second doses administered.

The WDH provides data regarding the number of doses administered and received across the state (interactive version available online):

The WDH provides a note about their vaccination data: “Vaccine counts do not include special federal allotments provided to the VA, military installations, or the Wind River Reservation.”

The WDH data for counties can lag up to three days and does not include “vaccines administered by Walgreens and CVS through the Federal Pharmacy Partners for Long Term Care program.”

Counties are working their way through the priority list of groups to receive the virus.

Counties are administering the vaccine locally and are working through Phases 1a-1c,” the Wyoming Department of Health says. “Currently, most counties are vaccinating groups that fall into 1a and and some groups in 1b.”
