CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The estate of a Wyoming philanthropist and businessman has donated millions of dollars to Laramie County School District 1 to uplift high school sports.
On Monday night, the LCSD1 Board of Trustees began its regular meeting with a resolution that chair Tim Bolin referred to as “special.” Several district principals announced the estate of Maurice W. “Maury” Brown has donated over $1,000,000 to each high school in the district.
“I did not know Mr. Brown personally, but the gift he has given will be used very widely,” said Kerri Gentry, principal of South High School. “Our goal is to sustain that for years to come and to appreciate that gift and use it to help support kids and families at South High School.”
Brown, a longtime resident of Cheyenne, died at the age of 90 in October, according to his obituary. He graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1951. He and his family operated several businesses over his adult years, including a grocery market, hardware store, liquor market and gas station. Throughout his life, he supported many Cheyenne and Wyoming institutions, including Cheyenne Frontier Days, Cheyenne Animal Shelter, Meals on Wheels, Safe House, the COMEA Shelter and Salvation Army.
“Him and his wife giving this gracious gift to Central High School is an honor,” said Karen Dellridge, principal of Central High School. “We are so moved by that.”
