CASPER, Wyo. — A Florida man was sentenced to 41 months’ imprisonment for bank fraud on Wednesday and ordered to pay $27,000 to a Cheyenne financial institution, according to a release by the U.S. Justice Department
On Jan. 9, 2023, Kennard C. Bouk III deposited a counterfeit U.S. Treasury check in the amount of $560,625.04 made out to “Knight Insurance Company LLC,” the release said. Five days prior, Bouk had registered the LLC with the Secretary of State’s office and opened a business account at the financial institution.
It is believed that the check was reproduced from an image that was sold after the original U.S. Treasury check was stolen in the mail.
Bouk was able to unlawfully obtain $27,000 before the fraud was detected.
Bouk was arrested on Jun. 9, 2023, by the Apopka Police Department in Florida. He pleaded guilty to the charge under U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson in February, and was sentenced Wednesday, May 22.
The United Stated Secret Service investigated this crime.
