Child and adolescent psychiatrist Maddison Hussey, MD joined the medical staff at Wyoming Behavioral Institute in Casper this month. Child and adolescent psychiatrists complete advanced training focused specifically on the emotional, developmental and psychiatric needs of young people. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are rare in Wyoming and offer a critical level of expertise benefiting children, teens and their families.

The need is substantial. Suicide accounted for 34% of deaths among Wyoming youth ages 10 to 19 from 2012 through 2022, according to the Wyoming Department of Health. For 2019–2021, Wyoming’s adolescent suicide rate was 30.4 per 100,000, compared with 10.6 per 100,000 nationally during the same period.

Wyoming also continues to face a broader shortage of psychiatric providers. The Wyoming Department of Health’s 2025 HealthStat report found that 23 additional psychiatrists were needed to eliminate the state’s federally designated mental-health professional shortage areas.

Dr. Hussey earned her medical degree from Loma Linda University after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Point Loma Nazarene University. She completed postgraduate psychiatry training through Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, including two years of fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry.

During her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship, Dr. Hussey received both the Chief Fellow Award and Fellow Citizenship Award. She also served on fellowship recruitment and program-evaluation committees, developed an orientation resource for learners and providers on a child inpatient psychiatric unit, and lectured third-year medical students on anxiety disorders. In addition, Dr. Hussey wrote and presented a lecture series on autism in adults that was integrated into the residency’s curriculum.

Her academic work also included presentations on the Neurosequential Model in the care of dysregulated patients and the management of aggression in a child inpatient setting. She contributed to continuing medical education through the Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Podcast on topics including psychopharmacology, acceptance and commitment therapy, trauma and resilience, depression and exercise, and other areas of psychiatry and mental health.

Dr. Hussey joins WBI’s multidisciplinary medical and clinical team serving children, adolescents and families from communities throughout Wyoming. Her presence adds a rare specialty to that team and strengthens WBI’s ability to support young people with complex mental health needs.
