Mullen Fire Burning in Sage (Zach Alexander, Inciweb)

The University of Wyoming is allowing some of its facilities to be used as basecamps for firefighters battling the Mullen fire in the Medicine Bow National Forest west of Laramie.

According to a release from UW, the Cliff and Martha Hansen Teaching Arena on Highway 230 west of town is now a command center and basecamp for the fire activities. The university’s Research and Extension Center west of Laramie are also being used to set up firefighter’s tents.

Some 70 firefighters were housed in the arena earlier this week, according to the release.

The fire is one of the largest in the state’s history and has so far consumed around 176,000 acres and destroyed 65 structures. Nearly 1,100 firefighters are currently working on the fire, said the release.
